Vernonia lettermanii – narrow-leaf ironweed

Vernonia lettermanii foliage3

I do love the foliage of the American native, narrow-leaf ironweed, Vernonia lettermanii...even before it’s topped with the purple flowers.  It’s just so hard to find great textural plants like this.  Average to dry soil moisture and a sunny site are the key to success with this one.

  1. I’m almost ready to buy, but just wondered if the foliage turns a beautiful gold in the fall like Amsonia does? Also, do you know if it is a deer favorite?

    1. It doesn’t get the striking color like amsonia but the structure is interesting especially if you cut the seed heads which can take a while but worth it if you’re lacking winter interest . We’ve never had an issue with deer!
