  1. Nice photo of the large female and numerous smaller male cones of Cryptomeria. I was excited to learn recently what is “cryptic” about Cryptomeria: there are pollen-producing parts “concealed” inside the bases of the male cone scales, and for these, the genus was named by D. Don
    in 1838.
